Remote Access Quote Maker
Lige F. Hensley
January 11, 1992
Version 1.01
*** THIS FILE IS NOT FORMATTED FOR PRINTING ***
This program is shareware, it has NO WARRANTY and no guaruntee. Although I have tested this program
throughly, you can never know what may happen in different configurations.
I have used it on a 2 line Remote Access BBS running LANtastic 4.0. RAQUOTE
does NOT supported file locking, but you shouldn't need it to unless you are
doing something weird.
You can use this program for a month, without registration. If you find
it even remotely useful, send me 5 bucks, and it's your forever. Because I
don't believe in high shareware costs, this gets you all future versions.
BUT I am NOT going to mail you a disk everytime. This would easily go over
5 dollars in postage alone. So, what I'll do is mail you a key code that
goes into the RAQUOTE.CFG file. This will work on ALL FUTURE VERSIONS. And
in the odd event that I would want to change the key scheme. Then I will
split the bill for a new version on disk to you via US postal. You can get
future versions from my BBS (PITA-BBS) or when you happen to run accross it
somewhere.
What registering RAQUOTE will do is give you color. I hate crippleware
with a passion. But I can understand the reasoning behind it. So, RAQUOTE
will run with all the whistles and bells without being registered. But it will
not do anything in color. All the files it creates will be straight .ASC
unless registered. Then you get color and any ANSI enhancements that I might
put in future versions. Enough plugging for money.
Packing List:
(NOTE: You may NOT alter this acrhive in any way. NO BBS ADS, etc.
all they do is take time and money.)
RAQUOTE.EXE RAQUOTE executable file.
RAQUOTE.CFG Configuration file.
RAQUOTE.DOC This document.
RAQUOTE.CTL Special day quote file.
RAQUOTE.DAT Text file containing quote data.
RAQUOTE.CNT Number of the next quote.
PITA.BBS My BBS ad. (Well I WROTE it!!!)
RAQUOTE is fully customizable. By altering the RAQUOTE.DAT file you
can add your own quotes or delete ones you don't like. Another option is
to specify another .DAT file in the config file and use RAQUOTE as a "DAY
IN HISTORY" program.
The format of the .DAT file must be as follows:
LINE 1: This is the quote (or history story) in a single line, NO carriage
returns. If it is shorter than 80 characters, it will be centered, if it is
longer then the text will wrap around. But not a WORD-WRAP, so test your
quotes on screen first.
LINE 2: This is the credit line, put whoever said the thing here. Or whatever
you want. Also centered in necessary
You can force RAQUOTE to display a certain quote by setting RAQUOTE.CNT to
the number you want the next time RAQUOTE is run.
RAQUOTE creates a file (specified in the RAQUOTE.CFG file) that you use
as you wish. Some people may want RAQUOTE to make there WELCOME file while
some may use there maintenance batch file to merge it with there existing
WELCOME file. It's up to you.
In the CONFIG file there are nine color codes. If you have not registered
RAQUOTE then these must be set to 0. If they are not 0 then I can't guarntee
what will happen. You are taking matters into your own hands. When you do
register RAQUOTE these codes become active and I won't recommend leaving them
as zeroes. The format for these are as follows:
There should be nine numbers here. The first three control the "message"
that goes before the quote.
The second three control the quote itself.
The third three control the "said by" line.
The first number of any set controls intensity as follows:
0 normal characters
1 High-intensity characters (bright)
5 Blinking characters
The second number of any set controls foreground color as follows:
30 Black
31 Red
32 Green
33 Yellow
34 Blue
35 Magenta
36 Cyan
37 White
The thrid number of any set controls the background color, just add 10 to
the number above.
INSTALLING & RUNNING RAQUOTE
----------------------------
Basically, RAQUOTE can be installed anywhere. BUT there are a couple of
things you have to do. RAQUOTE.EXE and RAQUOTE.CNT must, MUST, be in the
same directory. If not then ERROR! When the number in RAQUOTE.CNT exceeds
the number of quotes, you'll get a blank quote. For those with like 10
quotes, I suggest you get more. For those with 10,000 this is for you!
Anyway it is up to YOU to manage this. I have a bunch of quotes in there
already. ALSO keep RAQUOTE.CTL in the same directory. If you don't use it
then keep the dates at 0 or something like December 98 or something. Other
than that put the other files wherever just make sure they are right in the
.CFG file.
Running RAQUOTE is fast and simple. An example on my BBS is:
RAQUOTE RAQUOTE.CFG
The config file is specified on the command line. You can out the full
path and filename there if it is elsewhere. I like to keep all my programs
in it's own directory, put it's up to you.
I have included as much error checking as possible. I really hate those
RUNTIME ERROR: 0000:1244 124 @$%$#^ things. I have TRIED to crash this
sucker but to no avail. (no this is not a challenge either!)
Since I don't think it's necessary, I haven't added an easy to use sysop
interface. I figure that this should be easy enough to use. But who
knows. I may decide to do it anyway. I have some ideas to improve this
already. Oh well....
